John Denton was made an Officer in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1977. He has had a long career in missionary work and in administration of the Anglican Church. His vocation took him to Africa in the fifties, an experience which served him well in his long time role on the Board of World Vision, Australia.
After returning to Australia, John was appointed Registrar of the Diocese of Sydney, and in 1978 he became the first full time General Secretary of the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Australia, a position he held until retirement in 1994. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2005 for service to teh Anglican Church of Australia and to the international communit through the programs of World Vision.
