Brian Hansford discovered that he could sing at the age of 13, when he joined the choir at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Canterbury. The Choir Director became Brian’s singing teacher for the next 7 years.
At the age of 23, having already won a number of singing competitions, Brian won the Sun Aria (now the Herald Sun Aria) in 1957. Part of his prize was a scholarship to study abroad.
He travelled to Munich and studied under Hans Hotter, and this launched him into a career in opera with the Bavarian State Opera, and many German and Austrian radio, television and concert appearances.
From 1962 Brian’s career continued in Australia and New Zealand, broadcasting on the ABC and Radio New Zealand, and as Principal Singer with The Victorian State Opera Company.
Brian went on to have a distinguished teaching career at the University of Melbourne, and as Head Vocal Studies at the Victorian College of the Arts.
